Restore Function & Comfort
Temporomandibular joint (TMJ) disorders are a group of conditions that affect the joint that connects the jaw to the temporal bones of the skull. This joint—also known as the temporomandibular joint— allows for jaw movements such as yawning, talking, and chewing. There are many factors that can contribute to TMJ disorders which can impair everyday oral function. While most treatments can be done at home, TMJ surgery is an option for patients who have tried other methods of treatment with little to no success.
At Round Rock Oral Surgery & Dental Implants, we understand how important having a full range of jaw motion is. Our surgeon, Dr. Weber dedicates himself to providing solutions—including TMJ surgery— for his patients to improve their quality of life. If you have tried other methods to resolve your TMJ disorder but are still experiencing pain and general impairment, contact our practice to schedule a consultation and learn whether TMJ surgery is the solution you’ve been looking for.
Benefits of TMJ Surgery
Pain Relief
TMJ disorders create chronic pain. Surgery alleviates pain, improving a patient’s quality of life and reducing discomfort during everyday activities like chewing or talking.
Improved Functionality
Because TMJ surgery addresses structural issues with the joint, it improves general jaw function including better jaw movement and reduced stiffness.
Correct Structural Problems
Repositioning or joint replacement surgery can correct structural abnormalities in the temporomandibular joint, which is beneficial for all patients but particularly those with severe joint damage or misalignment.
Improved Oral Health
By correcting TMJ disorders, the jaw will be under less stress and the occurrence of bruxism (teeth grinding) is reduced, preventing other dental problems.
Enhanced Jaw Stability
Surgery can strengthen the jaw joint, reducing the risk of dislocation or other issues relating to the temporomandibular joint.
Types of TMJ Surgery
Surgery for TMJ disorders vary based on the patient’s condition and any underlying issues. Any TMJ surgical procedure typically involves the administration of general anesthesia or local anesthesia with sedation. The type of anesthesia used will be determined by your surgeon.
Arthroscopy
This minimally invasive procedure begins with a small incision near the TMJ. A thin tube with a camera is then inserted to see the joint. This allows a surgeon to assess the joint’s condition, remove any debris in the joint, and can even enable them to perform minor repairs.
Arthrocentesis
In this procedure, a needle is inserted into the joint space to help irrigate and flush out the joint using a sterile solution, reducing inflammation, removing debris, and improving joint function.
Joint Replacement (TMJ Total Joint Replacement)
If the TMJ is severely damaged, it may necessitate a total joint replacement. The damaged joint is removed and replaced with an artificial joint made from materials such as metal or plastic. This life-changing surgery drastically improves the lives of patients who are severely impaired by their TMJ disorder.
Repositioning Surgery
To correct misalignment issues, repositioning surgery may be utilized to adjust the jaw’s position. By improving the alignment and structure of the jaw, pain associated with TMJ disorder is reduced and joint function is enhanced.
Types of Anesthesia
We offer several forms of anesthesia to ensure your comfort.
